M77 Galaxy

Home Page

M77, also known as the Squid Galaxy and Cetus A, is a barred spiral galaxy Type (R)SA(rs)b, 47 million light-years from Earth in constellation Cetus. M77’s apparent magnitude is 8.9 and was discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1780. This galaxy is binary paired with NGC1055 separated by 500 thousand light-years. These two are the largest galaxies of a small galaxy group, known as M77 group, that also includes NGC1073, and five other small irregular galaxies.

Messier 77 is an active galaxy with an active galactic nucleus, which is obscured from view by astronomical dust at visible wavelengths. It is the brightest and one of the closest and best-studied type 2 Seyfert galaxies

The list below exhibits the number of subframes used with the exposure time for each filter. All the subframes were calibrated with Flats, Darks and Biases by PixInsight. Afterwards the subframes were combined and processed to the final image.
